A gourmet chef will generallly have a culinary degree and be responsible for menu planning, grocery shopping and meal preparation and clean up of the kitchen. Cooks generally have less formal education may or may not do menu planning but cook really well. They are typically more flexible than a private chef depending on the needs of the family.
